I sat down with the infamous Dave King of LongWalkShortDock for a small chat on what it’s like to be a performer. Starting the conversation with jokes and queries about the scene of digital media and performance and the ups and downs of this new millenniums’ technology increase, especially within the music industry. And so the interview ensued…

I began by asking Mr.King what he focuses on most, as a performer, in his career (i.e./Do you focus on writing songs, the performance, reaching your fanbase, etc.)
to which explained that it is a “blend of high level performance, because of the type of people I convey it to and the music that it is, as well as continually bringing new material out”. King continued to explain that he has to constantly “amp up the performance” in order to keep people intrigued, to which he also noted he was not a D.J., saying “I am not a D.J., want distinction make!” such is the wonderful robotic nature of Mr.Dave King of LongWalkShortDock.

Moving [swiftly] on I asked King “What are some of the ways you promote yourself?”, of course demanding a different response being that digital media has taken over. King responded in a less deranged manner “the biggest thing is the physical part of promotion, things like..well I made a ton of pins and I just give them out to anyone, anyone and everyone, sometimes I leave them in random places and see what happens, it’s an interesting but effective way of promotion. The other part of that being selling t-shirts and CD’s of course”. King continued talking about digital promotion, which has all but almost taken over the business. He talked about how myspace is one of the more effective means of self-promotion these days “I’ve met people through it, booked shows, and I just make sure I reply to everyones messages and adds”. I told King that “I think most bands lose a lot of their fanbase because of the auto messages, not keeping in contact with their fans, just adding people but not finding out why” and King responded saying “well that’s one thing I make sure I do, I mean if someone’s going to add me I want to know why and I’ll thank them for adding me by leaving a comment on their page and asking how they heard of me and I’ll actually check out their myspace too and tell them what I think of their music [if they have any]“.

I then asked King “why did you choose to be a performer above anything else (i.e./ producing, working in studio’s, mixing, audio engineer, etc.) because you exert all of those qualities”, King responded that “I went to recording school so I could make my sound better and record properly” talking about how he did not get into this industry to work on other people’s music, but instead his own. I asked what David gets out of performing above anything else, to which he responded “I get a rush from live performance, it’s the rush that keeps me doing it, there’s nothing like performing in front of a crowd, performing your songs, it’s about the enthusiasm you give”. Right King is as he furthered about how some artists are all about the CD release and put nothing into performance, “you perform your songs, get that rush, it’s much better than just putting out a CD and saying you’ve done that”. This of course bringing us to the next question…

In reverence I ask “what is your target audience, and how do you make sure you’re constantly reaching them?”, King relating back to previous discussions “anyone really, anyone and everyone. right now I’m in this club/dance scene, because it’s what I can do right now” I responded “ah, like starting at the bottom sort of, though it’s more like starting where you just fit in best at the moment”. King, “yea like starting where you can, but like I said before I’m not a D.J. and I like to make that distinction by bringing live instruments, making it more human”, which is of course almost ironic for LongWalkShortDock himself to say, almost… I ask “so what is it that separates you from this collage of other digital performers” King in return “well it’s that little bit of live performance with a small array of instruments, the enthusiasm, if you don’t have the enthusiasm your gonna get shit thrown at you. You just have play what you’ve come prepared to play, if you try last minute to fit the model of the crowd you’re gonna get that shit thrown, you just have to be comfortable playing what you’re playing because it’s who you are no matter what”, truer words never were spoken.

Now to the boring material. “As a business man, what are some of the things you think are necessary in order to maintain your career as a performer?”.

King refers back to the question of promotion before “well it’s about the small things, keeping things personal, building a small basis between your fans I find is the way to do it. This is a very demanding scene and one important thing is to always keep current and constant with your music and your fans. I got signed to this kick ass label Black Van and I’m just gonna promote the hell out of it, I mean if they’re interested in distributing my music and keeping me on their roster then it’s only beneficial to me and my friends on the label to promote them as well right.” King hinted at a small press demo he plans on releasing and he thinks that is one of the best things you can do for yourself as an artist, and he says “I’m going to promote the hell out of that as well”. That wraps up the interview with Mr. LongWalkShortDock, a very successful endeavor. Leaving the room King demands a high five, after which I note that he is much taller than me, and than I remember from before the interview, the sight of success; a man that grows every waking minute.

As for today, Mat is coming down from Seattle to visit and we’ll be working on some songs. He just got a new bass and kick ass ampeg tube combo amp so we’ll be blasting that at InTheShed Studio’s which hasn’t been officially set up yet, still in the process of renovating it, yes it is actually a shed and yes it is in my back yard. I hope everyone has a nice day out in the sun, somebody enjoy it for me since I’ll be inside working on final projects for school all day. Cheers!
